coming up:
Film Festival at the cannery row imax on January 9, 2010

The growing spread of genetically modified crops is a source of concern around the globe. There are many moral, ethical, environmental and health issues surrounding the use of genetically modified seeds and foods. Come to learn what these issues are, how people around the globe handle them, and what communities are able to do when they work together.

This is a community event!  Come to hear a live concert by well-known musicians Bob Phillips (piano) and George Young (saxophone), and see an exhibit of Michelle Magdalena's art. Light refreshments courtesy of the Big Sur Bakery. And of course, many thanks to the Cannery Row IMAX for supporting the event!

The following films will be screened, followed by a panel discussion about the impacts of Genetically Modified crops on public health, the organic industry and the underserved communities of Monterey County.

Special guest Eric Schlosser, author of "Fast Food Nation", "Reefer Madness" and "Chew on This",  and co-producer of Food Inc, will join the panel discussion and share his thoughts about the problems with genetically modified crops.

  • 11-12:30 pm The Future of Food: distills the complex technology and key regulatory, legal, ethical, environmental and consumer issues surrounding the troubling changes happening in the food system today—genetically engineered foods, patenting, and the corporatization of food—into terms the average person can easily understand.
  • 12:45 - 2:15 pm Food, Inc: an Oscar-nominated documentary that examines large scale agricultural food production in the U.S., concluding that meat and vegetables produced by this type of economic enterprise are inexpensive, but unhealthy and environmentally harmful.
  • 2:30 - 3:30 pm The Power of Community: an award-winning documentary that tells the story of the community and creativity of Cuban communities as they hit peak oil, and how they transitioned from a highly-mechanized, industrial agricultural system into one that uses organic methods of farming, and local urban gardens.
  • 4:00 - 6:00 pm The World According to Monsanto: a widely praised film that combines secret documents with first-hand accounts by victims, scientists and politicians. This film has become the world's poster child for malignant corporate influence in government in technology.
  • 6:15 - 7:30 pm Panel Discussion:  What are the dangers of Genetically Modified crops and their impact on our health, the environment and the organic farmers in Monterey County. Panelists will be announced shortly.
